Epilogue

Three months later…

Tori fidgeted on the stool in front of the dressing table and its mirror while her aunt tried to tame her wayward curls. She could hear the guests milling around downstairs. In just a little while, she would be joining them.

“Will you sit still, dear?” Aunt Em said patiently. “Luke will be here in plenty of time for the wedding.”

She shifted in her seat and smoothed the ivory satin of the wedding gown that had been her aunt’s. She smiled a little at the slight swell of her stomach. She hadn’t told Luke about the babe’s coming in the letters that had gone back and forth these past weeks. The news would be another gift for him.

“I still can’t believe how everything worked out,” Tori said as Aunt Em set the coronet on her head and adjusted the veil.

“Things always do,” she replied. “You just have to have faith. Besides, after what happened with the sheriff, it just makes sense to have a permanent Ranger post here in south Texas. Captain McNelly can’t be everywhere.”

For which Tori was grateful. Luke had offered to quit the Rangers and accept the position of sheriff, but she wouldn’t hear of it, knowing it wouldn’t make him happy. He’d reluctantly taken his prisoners to Fort Stockton for trial, and in his absence Tori had resigned herself to being married to a part-time husband. It was better than not having Luke at all. Then the news had come that Luke was being assigned a permanent position in Corpus Christi. Grateful ranchers had deeded over several acres for headquarters and raised buildings seemingly overnight. Luke and Tori’s wedding dance would be held in the new barn tonight.

Tori broke out of her reverie at the sound of a horse galloping up to the house. She ran to the window and looked out to see Luke dismounting. His broad shoulders were encased in black superfine and the black trousers outlined his well-muscled thighs. Even from her second story window, she could see his boots had been polished. The sun burnished his hair gold as he looked up at her window. He grinned and flourished a bow.

“It’s bad luck to see your intended before the wedding,” Aunt Em said mildly.

Tori laughed and went to the door. “Then the wedding has just begun.” She flung the door open, ran down the steps, and out into the garden where she would marry the man she loved under the blue skies of Texas.
